Yamamoto is an idiot. While he might excel at things like sports, he may as well be brain dead in all other areas. He frequently fails tests, he can't seem to study, and even if you explained it to him he might not understand. He's oblivious to real-life dangers as well, thinking the weird Mafia action going on around him is little more than a child's game. Those bullets you shot at him? An elaborate toy as far as he's concerned. He'll laugh off your worries about almost anything and insist on a positive outlook. Games are meant to be fun, after all.

Despite this rampant stupidity, Yamamoto can have his serious moments. Usually these involve situations where he cannot ignore the very real gravity of a situation. When in battle mode, he is extremely focused on his opponent and he must win. He does not like to lose at anything, and any loss is seen as a injury to his pride that he has to make up.

Yamamoto was a pretty normal jock until one day Tsuna walked into his life. After being saved from a failed suicide attempt by the other boy, he was recruited into the Vongola Family mafia to become one of Tsuna's guardians. Tsuna's other guardian, Gokudera, didn't really like him but Yamamoto certainly enjoyed the other boys company and soon all three of them were often seen together. This continued for some time and they made more friends until Xanxus appeared with his guardians. Thus began the battle for the Vongola family rings, an event that caused Yamamoto to learn a sword technique called the Shigure Souen. He won his battle against Superbi Squalo, but not without losing a valuable chunk of his innocence with it.

Eventually they won the rings, but there was only more trouble on the horizon..
